Nintendo Switch : Absolutely Yes!… or not? 5 Pro’s and Con’s

Con: Launch titles

Even though Nintendo has some exciting titles to be released in the upcoming months after the launch of the system, the actual Launch titles are scarce to say the least. Japan will have a reasonable amount of games releasing with the switch. However, Us Europeans, Americans and other western countries will be left behind. There might be some third party releases planned that we haven’t heard of.  Still, now we’re nearing the launch date I’m not so confident about that. Next to the fact that there aren’t that many games on the release, the only really notable release title is Zelda: the Breath of the Wild.

Here are the known launch titles to date:

Western Release Japan
01 1, 2, Switch 1, 2, Switch
02 Just Dance 2017 Just Dance 2017
03 The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild
04 Skylanders Imaginators Skylanders Imaginators
05 Super Bomberman R Super Bomberman R
06 Snipperclips - Cut it out, together!
07 Spelunker
08 Romance of the Three Kingdoms 13
09 Puyo Puyo Tetris
10 Nobunaga's Ambition: Sphere of Influence
11 I Am Setsuna
12 Dragon Quest Heroes 1 & 2
13 Disgaea 5 Complete

Con: Paid Online service

before I go into details, please have a look at the Switch Online Service table:

Service Subscribers Non-Subscribers
Online gameplay Free Trial throughout Fall 2017
Online Lobby & Voice Chat app
Monthly game download
Exclusive deals
Access to Nintendo eShop
Register and manage Friends
Share screenshots to social media
Access to Nintendo Switch Parental Controls app

I am a huge supporter when it comes to paid online services. It has proven to work with XBL and (not so) soon after PSN followed in their footsteps. It enhances the online experience by sometimes providing better servers or in most cases to filter the gamers who are serious in playing online (most of the time), since you’re paying a good amount of money a year. Next to that, they provide extra’s like two free games per month. You get to keep them as long as you’re subscribed. They also offer good deals on games and content on the e-store. Even though Nintendo’s online service prices are unknown till this date and they claim they do offer exclusive deals on their e-shop, they are really clear what direction they’re going to when talking about free monthly games:

Monthly game download

Subscribers will get to download and play a Nintendo Entertainment System™ (NES) or Super Nintendo Entertainment System™ (Super NES) game (with newly-added online play) for free for a month.
– Nintendo website

Not only are they offering subscribers only one game a month, they are offering them a game that has been released quite some time ago. Even though they’re classics and I would enjoy playing them, I do not think the majority of gamers are eagerly waiting in line to play these titles. Secondly, they will be free for just a month. So not only will you be able to play a game that either you already have played before in your childhood or already own on cartridge, you won’t get to keep it for your entire subscription period.

In my eyes that’s a really poor choice of service providing. Hopefully I misinterpreted the info. Maybe they will change things as we are nearing the actual launch of the Switch, but the way it is described on their website and the way i interpret it as it is, things don’t look all that good to me.
