The plot twist
Plot twists actually play a big role in the Star Wars movies. If you look at the original trilogy, made in a time where the tinfoil hat army was far from what is is now and internet speculations weren’t a thing like they are now, the plot twists that Darth Vader was actually Anakin Skywalker, the father of Luke Skywalker and princess Leia was his sister were truly huge and iconic. More that thirty years later people still know the line ‘’No, I am your father”. Like I said before, a lot of people think Rey will turn out to be Luke’s daughter so that would hardly be a plot twist. However, few people seem to suspect Finn. Now ask yourself this (and be honest):
What would you have thought if Finn was played by a blonde haired white guy?
Because I firmly believe if this was the case, people would all be suspecting Finn to be Luke’s son since a lot of people also immediately thought Rey was related to Rogue One’s Jyn Erso, solely based on the fact that they both have brown hair. There are actually a lot of similarities between Finn and Luke. The space chess where Finn started at the exact moment where ANH left off. Finn picks up the little training ball Luke used to train with. Luke guns in the Falcon like Luke. Finn plays a big part in the destruction of Starkiller Base like Luke played a big part in the destruction of the Death Star. Although Rey has the force vision with the Skywalker lightsaber Finn is the one who is mostly using it in battle. Rey only uses it when Finn is knocked out by Kylo Ren and after that she immediately returns it to Luke. Finn gets the rebel pilot jacket like Luke got a rebel jacket in ANH to symbolize he was now part of the rebels/resistance (Think about that for a minute. Finn picked up a leather jacket in a hot desert). All of these tiny connections between Luke and Finn and aside from picking the best actor for the role regardless of skin color, and we know Disney and the producers of Star Wars are making sure the characters in the Star Wars universe are as diverse as possible, including lots of different ethnicities and even gay characters, Finn being black could be the perfect distraction. It’s like he’s hidden in plain sight because no one suspects anything as opposed to if Finn was played by a blonde white guy. But he’s black so he must be related to Lando Calrissian or Mace Windu right? This combined with all the obvious little hints that make you believe Rey is a Skywalker descendant would make Finn Skywalker a great plot twist that few people see coming.
